PROJECT TITLE

Agri-Food System Transformation and Innovation in Nigeria

Context

Nigeria’s National Pathway identifies 6 country solution clusters, that build on existing inter-ministerial policies. The clusters focus on increased agricultural productivity and food security awareness, inclusive and sustainable food systems, improved livelihoods through strengthened value chains, enhanced demand for nutritious food, risk mitigation and enhanced regulation standards, direct link between innovation and extension services reach out.

Nigeria has established a robust, multilevel and multisectoral food systems governance structure led by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. The platform for the Pathway implementation has been strengthened by constituting a multi-stakeholder National Task Team and a National Steering Committee that works as a think tank and coordination body.

Outcomes
  • Leveraging digital technologies and data to improve Nigeria’s food system governance, efficiency, and security, building on the premise that a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach could mobilize more resources and fast track Nigeria’s pathway implementation. 
  • Addressing systemic challenges with a focus on agricultural productivity, post-harvest management, market access, nutrition knowledge and awareness, gender equity, climate resilience, leveraging data, digital technologies, and innovative business approaches.

  • Demonstrated increase in production, sales, and income generation for smallholder farmers through the promotion of digital technologies to improve access to information and decision-making in targeted areas.
  • Measurable decrease in food losses and waste leading to improved food security through advancement in collective production and management, and enhanced market linkages.
  • Improved nutrition knowledge and behavior among target groups of women, school-age children, and adolescents.
  • Strengthened food systems governance through documented achievement of targets of the National Food Systems Transformation Strategy within the action plan.
