Rethinking the Value of Food: Addressing Food Loss and Waste for Advancing Food Systems Transformation

12/11/2026

Date: 12 November 2026 | 10:00–10:50 TRT

Location: Nordic Pavilion, COP31, Antalya, Türkiye

Organizers: UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, Food Nation Denmark, Nordic Council of Ministers

Food loss and waste affect food security, nutrition, livelihoods and climate action, yet efforts to address them often remain disconnected from wider food systems policies and investment priorities. Reducing losses across food value chains requires coordinated approaches to storage, processing, logistics, market infrastructure and resource efficiency.

This side event will explore how national food systems pathways can support food loss and waste reduction while strengthening climate resilience and creating economic opportunities. Bringing together government representatives, National Food Systems Convenors, private sector actors and technical experts, the discussion will highlight practical solutions, investment needs and partnerships across food value chains.

Drawing on experiences from the Nordic region and other countries, the event will examine how governments and businesses can work together to expand effective solutions, improve resource efficiency and strengthen the contribution of food loss and waste reduction to national food systems and climate objectives.
