As part of the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development 2026 (AFSD 2026), this Special Session will bring together key stakeholders to explore integrated solutions to the interconnected challenges facing the Arab region.

With SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11, and 17 under review, the session positions agrifood systems transformation as a critical entry point to accelerate progress across these goals. Food systems lie at the center of the region’s most pressing challenges – including water scarcity, energy demand, climate vulnerability, and rapid urbanization – yet they also offer significant opportunities for more coherent and sustainable development pathways.

This session will explore how a Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus approach can help address these interlinkages by moving beyond siloed approaches and promoting integrated, cross-sectoral solutions.

Bringing together policymakers, development partners, and practitioners, the discussion will highlight how coordinated policies, investments, and innovations can generate multi-dimensional benefits, while showcasing practical solutions, governance approaches, and partnerships that enable effective implementation.

The session will feature regional examples of localized solutions, with a particular focus on strengthening urban–rural linkages, advancing circular approaches, and enhancing coordination across sectors and governance levels.
